Arctic Voices Tour Highlights the Need for a
Carbon Cap to Combat Global Warming

Minnesota Natural Legacy Campaign joins with a diverse coalition to sponsor the tour

St. Paul, Minn. (April 30, 2007) – The Minnesota Natural Legacy Campaign (MNLC) is a proud sponsor of the Arctic Voices Tour. The tour features representatives from the Saami Council, Inuit Circumpolar Conference and the Neetsaii Gwich’in Indians, and will focus on how global warming is impacting people in the arctic region.

As part of the tour, the group will speak at the Humphrey Institute and hold a community forum at the Westminster Presbyterian Church. In addition to the MNLC, the tour is being sponsored by the Circumpolar Conservation Union, Arctic Council Indigenous Peoples Secretariat and the Will Steger Foundation/Global Warming 101.

“This tour is a real eye opener, and will hopefully spur Minnesotans to commit to being leaders in the fight to stop global warming,” said Kelly Scanlan, Director of the MNLC.

The MNLC believes the best way to combat global warming is through a cap and trade system. This system cuts pollution levels through hard limits and gives companies the flexibility to find ways to meet or stay under the limits. Analysts believe that a cap will spur companies to develop new clean energy sources and more efficient technology.

“Right now we have the resources and workforce to meet the challenges presented by global warming,” stated Scanlan. “We simply need our elected officials in Washington, DC and St. Paul to have the courage to take on this problem.”

Minnesota Natural Legacy Campaign is a group of concerned citizens who recognize that human activities are changing the Earth’s climate in a way that threatens the state’s natural heritage, economy and quality of life.
